Description: Operas and other classical music often incorporate folk tunes, but this one did just the opposite. The tune is from Carl Maria von Weber's opera Der Freischütz, first performed in Berlin in 1821. By 1826 this tune had already become a part of the English folk tradition, although it has changed a bit from the original operatic version. You can compare them in numerous videos online. What makes it interesting to me as a dulcimer player is that while fiddlers now play it in G, in the opera it is sung in D, so if a fiddler tells you you’re playing it in the wrong key, you can tell him you’re right!
Key: D Major
