I'm thinking about subscribing to Dulcimer Player News. Who gets it and your thoughts about it please.

Steve, my answer is decidely biased as I'm a former columnist for DPN. I think it's an excellent publication for dulcimer enthusiasts. There something for both mountain and hammered dulcimer players in each issue. Also you'll find dulcimer history, suggestions on performing, information about festivals and ads for dulcimers and related products. I've been a subscriber for over 25 years.

I subscribe too, Steve. I recommend it to my students. It is full of info and I look forward to each isssue and I read it cover to cover as soon as it arrives! there is usually a tune a piece for MD and HD also in each issue. GailK

I've only gotten one issue -- the one that reviewed my CD. I was excited at how thick it was, but disappointed when I read it. I'm not really interested in MD, not at all interested in ads (I can't afford to buy much, and I only go to one festival each year), and there's not much about HD. I'm glad I got it for the tunes and the article about Jim Taylor, but I don't think I will subscribe anytime soon. There's nothing wrong with it, and what it has is very well done, there's just not enough HD stuff for me to pay for a subscription -- but then again I rarely buy anything.

dulcimer players news

I have subscribed to DPN for a couple of years. I love it. Its true that there an awfully lot of ads. But, personally, I enjoy looking and dreaming. The articles are interesting and very informative. I am much more interested in MD than HD, but it is kind of fun to scan the HD articles and learn a little something along the way. I highly recommend it.

Personally, I highly recommend DPN. It is true that they have a lot of ads, but I like to look. Usually, there is at least one article that makes the whole issue worthwhile. And the songs are nice too. I do think the focus is a bit more slanted toward MD than HD. I too would like to see more HD articles, but it is a minor point. All in all it is a great publication and I recommend it highly. It is a great way to stay in touch with what is going on in the dulcimer community.

DPN

It is the totality of the music community that I support by subscribing to the DPN. ED serves the Internet directed music world. DPN serves the folks who are sitting in an easy chair in the living room or in a rocker on the porch. I really enjoy looking at old issues.

Marcy: The Jim Taylor issue you perused was a weak issue, especially in the hammer dulcimer area. You might want to give DPN a second shot. Rarely do I not find enough interesting material to make it worth the price of a subscription... Best to y'all. Byll
