Try this link. I can not play using tabs. Hope this is what you need.

Clinch Mountain Backstep tabs

Postby FidPup » Wed Mar 11, 2009 1:27 pm

Hi, Beth,

Clinch Mountain Backstep is played using a minor scale, which is the "Aeolian mode" on a dulcimer.

In order to play it in D-A-A tuning you need to put a capo at the first fret.

Here is a tab in D-A-A with capo at the first fret (which will actually be in the key of E minor):

The other way to play the tune in the correct mode is to change the tuning to D-A-G. Tune your melody string down one note.

Here is a tab in D-A-G Aeolian tuning (which gives you the key of D minor):

Of course, if you want to play the second tab in the "usual" key of E minor, just tune your dulcimer up to E-B-A.

Hope this helps!

This is handy - I have just heard this tune on an old Ralph STanley clip and was going to start hunting it out.

Thanks!

Any chance anyone has a DAD tab for Clinch Mountain Backstep? These all seem to be playing higher notes than what I observed. Saw a video of this on Facebook the other day and would like to learn it then share it with my dulcimer group.

Thanks.

If a DAD version doesn't turn up, you can take the existing DAA version and subtract 3 from the DAA fret numbers for DAD and write the fret numbers below the DAA tab. The 3rd fret in the DAA tab is the same as the zero fret on a DAD dulcimer or the middle string 3rd fret, so if you use a capo you can play 3 on the middle string.

Here is a simple and crude translation.

A Part
5 5 8 7 5 4 5 4 3 2 1

5 5 8 7 5 4 5

5 5 8 7 5 4 5 4 3 2 1 1 1 3 3 2 1 3M 1

B Part
3M 1 1 1 3m 1 1 1 3 2 1 3 2 1

3m 1 1 1 3 1 3 4 5

5 5 8 7 5 4 5 4 3 2 1 1 1 3 3 2 1 3M 1

Good Luck

I had so much fun making the translation, I decided to make a quick MP3.

Thanks Tony

Ken posted the original tab 8 years ago. It's reassuring to know that anything posted here might be useful to someone over such a long period of time. I was glad to help and it was fun learning a new tune at the same time.

Thanks for putting sharing this tune! I had not heard of it before. Just so no one is confused, D-A-G is dorian tuning, not aeolian. However, you can almost play the aeolian scale in dorian tuning, except that the sixth note isn't flatted.

Thanks Grant

This song is missing one note in the diatonic scale, so I found it fits DAC tuning also. Attached is another crude tab translation and an mp3 for DAC tuning. This version is also in D minor.
