Green Grow the Lilacs, key of C sheet music?

Postby Julie Hopkins » Mon Mar 28, 2016 2:29 pm

Looking for standard musical notation for this tune in key of c. I already have tab and chords for key of D, and see online versions available in key of G. But want key of C for my singing voice and for others in the group I play with (fiddle, guitar, bass). Thank you!

Julie,

Why not just transpose the key of D tab to key of C? This is just a matter of mapping the notes in the key of D to the corresponding notes in key of C:

D -> C
E -> D
F# -> E
G -> F
A -> G
B -> A
C# -> B

Basically, just lower everything a whole step. The chords work the same way: D -> C, Em -> Dm, ...

Or you could just tune to C-g-c and play the D tab.

I was going to suggest that, but Julie didn't mention anything about a mountain dulcimer. Plus, she also mentioned singing and other instruments, so I'm not sure that would help.

Well, took me a while to get back to this! Thank you for the comments. Yes, I play the mountain dulcimer. I can transpose chords, and/or capo. However what I didn't explain is that I'm looking for the standard music notation for other members of my group who play other instruments (guitar, banjo, fiddle) and need the melody NOTES in standard notation :)

I now have Tabledit but no clue yet how to use it! But maybe I'll figure it out soon. THANKS!

Julie,

So let me make sure I understand this. You have a dulcimer tab for the melody that does not have standard music notation in the key of D. You want to convert this to standard music notation in the key of C for you and the other players. Is that right? If so, you should be able to create a tab with TablEdit using a dulcimer tuning that is a whole step lower (DAD -> CGC for example, on TablEdit this would be C[3] G[3] C[4]) and entering the numbers from the tab into TablEdit.

It appears "Green Grow The Lilacs" may have evolved from "Green Grows The Laurel" from Scotland. The stories behind the song are classic. There are many variations of the melody and lyrics. Attached is a sheet music only pdf in C along with a midi in C. Also attached are urls to sites with some history related to the song. It will be a good song to add to my music collection for playouts, but I'll probably do it in D or maybe a higher key (C is too low for my voice).
