Here are a couple of well known traditional Old Time tunes on mountain dulcimer. Both of these tunes come the piano playing of from Virginia multi-instrumentalist, Hobart Smith. Hobart had a very distinctive style of piano playing which was derived from his banjo technique. Lonesome Road Blues is also known as the tune for the song, "Going Down This Road Feeling Bad", recorded by Woody Guthrie among many others.

Mark, thanks for posting all these. My wife and I are learning Old Black Cat Couldn't Catch a Rat. I like the Billings piece. I have a bunch of William Billings music I acquired while a student at the UNC-Greensboro NC School Of Music many years ago. If I look for it, I'll never find it. Maybe I'll stumble across it someday.

Two videos is becoming the norm. There are so many wonderful tunes to play (:

Will Kemp was a famous comic actor in Shakespeare's time. A jegg, or jigg was a group of entertainments involving songs, dancing and recitations. The term became confused with the dance which was also spelled with two g's. And to muddy the water's further, there were several tunes known as Kemp's Jigg. This "jegg" is also a "jig".

The second video is a lively couple dance from Sweden.

Two videos this week:

For most of my teen years, I regularly went to international folk dancing sessions where I learned hundreds of tunes from all over the world. Most of the dances were Balkan or Isreali:

One of the many activities of the folk music clubs of the north east was Sacred Harp singing with a focus on the great music and the wonderful harmonies.
