Cherokee Shuffle

Postby Honniker » Sat Nov 15, 2008 8:52 pm

Anyone know where I can find a tab for this? I was recently playing Nutfactory shuffle at a jam session and someone recommended that I try learning Cherokee shuffle. It's a great song, but I'm having trouble finding the tab. Any suggestions?

Check Stephen Seifert's "Join the Jam" music book in both DAA and DAd

I believe "Dulcimer Solos", by Stephen Seifert has that tab in it.

Prussia Valley carries it. I'm sure others do too.

It's not a simplified dulcimer version. If you are playing at a mixed instrument jam they are probably playing the version shown in the link below. If you are playing at a dulcimer jam, try to find Steven's "Join the Jam" since he simplified it for mountain dulcimers.

This has mandolin tab http://www.nigelgatherer.com/tunes/tab/tab1/cher.html but the standard notation is there so you can make your own tab from it.

Peace and music,
Dave

It's also shown in "Fiddlin Around on the Mountain Dulcimer (With Friends)", by Helen Johnson.

Sorry, I don't have any of Steve's books at this time other than a couple of copies of his Christmas book. Don't know that we will get any in. We are in the process of redoing our website, hopefully getting it on line by the end of the year. His products will not be listed on it. We do carry Helen's books however. Thanks Bill. Friends,

Here is my tab for Cherokee Shuffle. This is the version of Cherokee Shuffle we play around my neck of the woods (Dayton, Ohio).

Image

There are a few "tricky bits" in playing this tune:

The first two melody notes of the tune (shown as slurred grace-notes) are played on the middle string by sliding your index finger from the 2nd to the 3rd fret, giving a "fiddle-like" slurred-unison sound.

Then, for the first two notes in the second measure continue to use your index finger to play the middle-string notes. Use either your middle or your ring finger to play the F# (2) note on the melody string.

Notice the quarter-rests shown in the 4th and 13th measures. Rests are pretty rare in dulcimer tab, but this one indicates a definite silent beat. The two following notes should be emphasized.
The effect should be "dah da-da dah dah (mute) BAM BAMM".

The rhythm in the 7th-8th and 18th-19th measures is syncopated, like ragtime.
It should sound like "dah di dah di dah dahhhh".

There are two extra measures at the end of the B-part of this tune, so some would call it a "crooked" tune.

OK, now go practice!!

If anyone would like a PDF copy of this tab, along with a MIDI file, just send me a message.

Incidently, as with all my tabs, I offer this one freely and without copyright.

Cheers!
