Playing a bass mountain dulcimer

Postby Jellybean » Thu Sep 28, 2017 3:42 pm

I'd like to know something about playing a BASS mountain dulcimer.

I've never met one in person, and have never heard one except on McSpadden's web site in the section where you can listen to a brief playing of different models they make. I like the sound and am wondering if you play one in the same manner as a regular MD :?:

Tnx, Jellybean

Yes. You can also play just chords. I have, basically, 2 of them and use it both ways, as does a good friend.

There were a couple articles in Dulcimer Player News within the last few years about playing bass accompaniment. You might look those up too. You can certainly play the regular melody/chords too but if you want to sound like a bass player in a band, you can do that too.

I also like some of the songs Janita Baker plays on a bass dulcimer; see her cds.

JellyBean, Larry Conger has an E-book called "It's All About the Bass Dulcimer" available on his website. It is described as "The tabs are arranged in DAD tuning and closely follow what you would expect a bassist to play. These are not solo arrangements. Instead, they are single note, accompaniment style arrangements. These are bass line arrangements for 100 jam tunes, by Elaine Conger.
