Free Tab for October 2017 - "Santa Lucia"

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that the tab for October has been posted on my website, Eagle Creek Music. This month's free tab is an Italian barcarolla that has become a traditional Swedish Christmas folk hymn. "Santa Lucia" was originally a Neopolitan folk tune written in honor of the Christian martyr St. Lucy, who was put to death by the Romans in 304 A.D. for conspiring to bring food to persecuted Christians hiding in dark underground tunnels. According to legend, she wore a wreath of candles on her head to light the way as she carried her baskets of provisions. The song has been traditionally sung by Venetian gondoliers as they piloted their boats on the canals. But the legend of St Lucy made its way to the Scandanavian countries sometime during the 16th century, when she is said to have saved a small fishing village from starvation by appearing on a "boat of light" laden with provisions. That miracle occurred on what was then the winter solstice - the shortest day/longest night of the year, and "Lucia" or "light" signals the time when the days start to grow longer once again. Today, "Festivals of Light" in honor of St. Lucia are celebrated around Christmas time throughout the Scandanavian world, and new lyrics to the traditional Italian tune have been written that honor her.

Here is a link to a YouTube video of the traditional Saint Lucia festival of lights processional, filmed in Stockholm in 2016.

This is a 2-part arrangement, melody and bass. There are less than 100 days until Christmas, so get practicing!

In music and friendship,
