Free Tab for November 2017 - "Let All Things Now Living"

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that the tab for November has been posted on my website, Eagle Creek Music. In honor of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, this month's free tab is an arrangement of "Let All Things Now Living", written by Katherine Kennicott Davis as a choral anthem in 1923. Early in her career, Davis published under the pseudonym John Cowley in order to be taken more seriously in the male-dominated music publishing industry. Later in her life, she became of professor of music theory and composition at Wellesley College, and eventually at the New England Conservatory of Music. When health issues forced her to retire from the classroom, she returned to composing. She is credited with over 800 compositions in her lifetime, both vocal and instrumental pieces, including anthems, operas, and cantatas. She is best remembered today for her popular Christmas song "Carol of the Drum", which is also known as "The Little Drummer Boy".

"Let All Things Now Living" has become most popular during the Thanksgiving season. Rather than creating a new melody for this piece, Davis paired it with the buoyant Welsh folk tune, Llwyn Onn, which is most recognized for its use with the song "The Ash Grove". The roots of this melody may be found in the eighteenth century. Arrangements published in England in the early and mid-nineteenth century increased its popularity in Europe. Davis’s use of the tune brought it to broader denominational prominence in the United States.

Here is a link to a YouTube video of this hymn being sung by the Lebanon County Youth Chorus.

This is a 2-part arrangement, melody and bass, so find a playing partner, and get it ready for your Thanksgiving celebrations.

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

In music and friendship,

Tull Glazener
