Dennis Dorogi died in Brocton, New York. He was born February 27, 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio. Dennis served in the Army National Guard and attended Ohio University, graduating with a Bachelors and a Masters of Fine Arts Degrees. He taught fine arts at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois and at SUNY Fredonia in New York. After retiring from teaching, he built his studio and opened a luthier business and was known as a master craftsman building and selling finely handcrafted mountain, hammered dulcimers and psalteries. Dennis was a founding member of the Chautauqua Crafts Alliance and was recognized for outstanding achievement as an individual artist in Chautauqua County in 2009. Dennis played an important role in both mountain and hammered dulcimer communities in New York state and Pennsylvania, maybe even extending in to Ohio and New England.

In the 1991-01 issue of Dulcimer Players News, Vol. 17 No. 1, Linda J. Banas wrote an article about Dennis and related this story illustrating the quality of his instruments, '...Mr. Dorogi went to the wall and took down his first dulcimer, built in 1959. He blew several years' worth of dust off it and plucked the strings. They were in tune! The instrument had a fine, mellow sound. Mr. Dorogi played a tune, turned with a smile, and said , "Well, that sure shoots to hell the theory of friction pegs being bad news I really can't say when I played that last."'
