Ralph Lee Smith received from Western Carolina University a “Lifetime Achievement Award” for “his extraordinary efforts and success in tracing the history and roots of the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer”.

Appalachian dulcimer historian Ralph Lee Smith plays Sourwood Mountain on his Appalachian dulcimer made about 1890 by Charles N. Prichard of Huntington, West Virginia.
