Dulcimer maker and player Frank Benjamin Proffitt, Jr. (1946- 2005) died in Watauga County, North Carolina. He was born September 8, 1946. He was an accomplished musician, playing the banjo, guitar and dulcimer. Like his Uncle Ray Hicks, he was also quite a story teller.

Frank Jr.’s mother was Bessie Hicks, daughter of early dulcimer builder Nathan Hicks. Frank Jr. was cousin to dulcimer builder Stanley Hicks and dulcimer player Nettie Presnell.

Lois Hornbostel wrote in oldtimeherald.org that Frank "...was a charming performer of Appalachian traditional songs, tunes and tales...and played his mountain dulcimer and fretless banjo with an exciting rhythm. His speech, phrases, and stories retained evidence of his family’s 18th century North Carolina/Tennessee mountain roots..."
