28 August 1832 is the date written inside the teardrop shaped dulcimer made by John Scales, Jr. from Floyd County Virginia, making it the oldest known signed and dated dulcimer. See pages 41-43 of Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions, 2 ed, by Ralph Lee Smith. Also see article and photos in July/August 2013 issue of The Magazine ANTIQUES by Roddy Moore and Vaughn Webb titled, “The Virginia dulcimer” http://www.themagazineantiques.com/article/the-virginia-dulcimer/
