Jacob Ray Melton (1923-2000) was born in southwestern Virginia. He was the son of Jacob Fredrick Melton (1893-1967) and Lina C. Whittington (1893-1957) and the younger brother of dulcimer playing champion Ruth Melton (1917-1980). Jacob served in the Navy during WWII, worked in a Galax furniture factory, and as a truck driver. Though he did not participate in dulcimer contests like many of his family members did Ralph Lee Smith wrote, “He learned dulcimer making from his father and how to play from his mother” and that he “was the last maker-player of a family that had made and played dulcimers for more than 100 years.” (Ralph Lee Smith p. 64 Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions, 2nd Ed.)
