Frank Benjamin Proffitt, Jr. (1946- 2005) was born to Frank Proffitt, Sr. (1913-1965) and Bessie Mae Hicks (1914-1997) the daughter of dulcimer maker and player Nathan Hicks (1896-1945) and sister to renowned Jack Tales teller Ray Hicks and the daughter of Nathan Hicks. He was an accomplished musician, who played the banjo, guitar and was noted for making and playing mountain dulcimers. Like his Uncle Ray Hicks, he was also quite a story teller.

Frank Jr. was cousin to dulcimer builder Stanley Hicks and dulcimer player Nettie Presnell.

It has been written that Frank was a humble man, very laid back, and receptive to folklorists and researchers who approached him for information on his family and the traditions they helped to maintain.

Lois Hornbostel wrote in oldtimeherald.org that Frank "...was a charming performer of Appalachian traditional songs, tunes and tales...and played his mountain dulcimer and fretless banjo with an exciting rhythm. His speech, phrases, and stories retained evidence of his family’s 18th century North Carolina/Tennessee mountain roots..."

Frank was definitely good at playing and singing with his dulcimer.
