David Schnaufer (1952-2006) was born in Hearne, Texas.

As a young man, he came across a display of dulcimers in Austin, Texas and bought one for $40. In 1976 he won the first National Mountain Dulcimer Competition held at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas.

After winning several dulcimer contests Schnaufer moved to Nashville in 1985 to work as a session musician.

David progressed from playing in restaurants for tips to playing his dulcimer on recordings with The Judds, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, and Chet Atkins, among others.

According to Vanderbilt News, David Schnaufer “revived the use of the dulcimer in country music.” In 1995, with Schnaufer’s guidance, a dulcimer program at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music began and with David teaching dulcimer as an associate adjunct professor. A Master Class was started in the summer of 1996.
Throughout his career, Schnaufer researched the history and culture of the Appalachian dulcimer, collecting instruments, oral histories, and music. Regarding the dulcimer David said, “Anybody can make beautiful music in five minutes of playing the dulcimer… It’s the simplest of all the stringed instruments, but can be as complex as anything else.” His solo albums included ‘‘Delcimore,’’ ‘‘Dulcimer Player’’ and ‘‘Dulcimer Deluxe.’’

David died from lung cancer in 2006.
