William “Wiley” Proffitt (1874-1954) died in Sugar Grove, Watauga County, North Carolina.

Father of Frank Proffitt, Sr. Wiley was born at Bakers Gap, Crackers Neck, Johnson County, Tennessee, the son of John W. Proffitt (1837-1913).

The Proffitt family moved to the Cracker Neck section of the eastern Tennessee mountains just after the Civil War from Wilkes County, North Carolina.

Eventually William “Wiley” moved to Reese, North Carolina, a few miles below the Tennessee border. There Wiley earned a living as a farmer, cooper, and tinker. He also made banjos and dulcimers as well.

He was married to Rebecca “Creed” Waters (1878-1947) and they were the parents of Ida, Henry, Mae and Frank Noah Proffitt Sr.
