Polina Catherine "Lina" Whittington Melton (1893-1957) died in Galax, Virginia and was buried a few days later in the Melton Cemetery, Carroll County. Lina was born in Carroll County, Virginia.

Lina was the wife of Jacob Frederick Melton (1893-1967), son of Samuel Amon Melton (1863-1933) and they had four children. At least two of their children are well known in dulcimer lore, Ruth Caroline Melton Russell (1917-1980) and Jacob Ray Melton (1923-2000), both of whom Lina taught how to play.

Her sister Myrtle married Jacob Frederick Melton's brother, Pierce Franklin Melton (1901 - 1983) both of whom were also dulcimer players.

Ralph Lee Smith writes in his book, Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions, that Lina was "one of Virginia's outstanding players". At the Old-Time Fiddler's Convention in Galax, Virginia, she placed 2nd in the dulcimer contest in 1935, 1936, and 1940.
