Today In Mountain Dulcimer History: 28 October 2000

Jacob Ray Melton (1923-2000) died in Salem, Virginia. He was the son of Jacob Fredrick Melton (1893-1967) and Lina C. Whittington (1893-1957) and the younger brother of dulcimer playing champion Ruth Melton (1917-1980). Jacob served in the Navy during WWII, worked in a Galax furniture factory, and was a truck driver. Though he did not participate in dulcimer contests like many of his family members did Ralph Lee Smith wrote, “He learned dulcimer making from his father and how to play from his mother” and that he “was the last maker-player of a family that had made and played dulcimers for more than 100 years.” (Ralph Lee Smith p. 64 Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions, 2nd Ed.)

When I initially posted this here and on the ED Face Book page I used a copy of the photo on the cover of Ralph Lee Smith's book, Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions, 2nd ed, Fortunately Ralph happened to be on-line and sent me the following (and kind) correction:

Ralph Lee Smith 10/28/2017: "I'm very glad to clear up a confusion. On the back cover and on page 68 of my book, Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions, this person is identified as Jacob Ray Melton. It is actually Jacob Melton, Jacob Ray's dad. The ramified Melton family is otherwise correctly described in the book, pp. 62-70, with a correct picture of Jacob Ray on p. 70."

Thankfully I now have a correct photo of Jacob Ray Melton.
