Roosevelt Vance Presnell (1902-1994), a nephew of Eli Taylor Presnell (who made a copy of a dulcimer from the "Stranger from the West" who first brought the mountain dulcimer to western North Carolina) was born on this date in Watauga County, NC. His mother, Polly Presnell (1868-1935), was sister to Eli Presnell He married Grace Harris (b. 1907) on March 18, 1923 and they had six children. Roosevelt was a farmer, and according to Ralph Lee Smith in his book Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions, may have owned a dulcimer made by Eli Presnell. Roosevelt made several dulcimers and taught his son, James Miles Presnell, how to make them as well.
