Jean Ritchie (1922-2015) was born in the southern Appalachian community of Viper, Kentucky to Abigail (Hall) and Balis W. Ritchie. Jean was the youngest of the 14 children.

Jean said singing together was a daily part of life for the family and the songs were a natural accompaniment to everyday tasks on the farm and in the home. Their repertoire of family songs consisted primarily of Anglo-American tradition of the southern Appalachian Mountains. In addition to singing during the work of the day the family often gathered on the porch in the evening to “sing the moon up”. Sometimes they sang their songs accompanied on the mountain dulcimer played by her father.

After she graduated from college in Kentucky Jean moved to New York City to follow her career as a social worker. There she met and married George Pickow. The mountain dulcimer was pretty much unknown in New York City and generated attention wherever she went with it. Over time, with her various concert appearances, recordings and books the popularity of the mountain dulcimer grew and helped to fuel the folk music revival of the period. She and George even had a workshop in Brooklyn making and selling dulcimers.

In 2001, partly through her efforts, the Kentucky General Assembly established the Appalachian Dulcimer as the State Instrument.
