First dulcimer..Jetrho Amburgey at that!

Postby ole Shenandoah » Sat Jul 09, 2016 8:12 pm

Greetings all. Though I normally play guitar and classic rock genre,I was given a dulcimer from a relative the other day. It's a mountain 3 string and of vintage stock. In excellent playing condition,no repairs and has a label inside the resonator hole that states"Jethro Amburgey Cody Ky Jan 12 1940. #11? on top of the label, but the last digit has a an insect hole chewed through it.

With some research I see that this gentleman was quite the dulcimer craftsman of the early.mid 20th century, and well respected. I am honored to receive such a gift but I must confess it's not really my forte of playing, though it looks tempting! Any ideas of the worth of one of these? Here's some pics I shot off the cuff for y'all, hope you enjoy...

You have a wonderful, old instrument. Cherish it, which I am sure you will. Jethro learned from Uncle Ed Thomas when Thomas would visit Amburgey at the Hindman Settlement School.

Yea,at first I thought ole Jethro was lost when he labeled Cody KY as home,as it doesn't exist on Google maps, lol.Like when the TVA flooded George Clooney's land in O'Brother Where Art Thou... :D

Yeah, those old Amburgeys turn up all the time, the market is flooded with them. I'll give you $20 for it if you pay shipping...
