Use the Strothers String Gauge calculator
http://strothers.com/string_choice.html
to select which strings are appropriate for your instrument. You need to know the VSL of your dulcimer and the desired Open notes you normally tune to. Use the notation DAd or DAA (or CGc, CGG) for the open notes. you can go slightly heavier strings with no problem, but don't go lighter...
