Best books and instructional materials include those already mentioned. Now what songs do you already know; that's what helped me start better than any book. Can you begin to pick out any tunes floating around in your brain already? You know those good old nursery rhymes. What music do you and the children listen to? A web site 8notes.com has many songs you can hear and see the standard notation. If you know anything about music you can put it into tab.

For the last 5 years, I've been volunteering in 5 local schools (3rd-6th graders) teaching dulcimer with the music teacher. Some of the work is with music and some without. So this year one of the students heard me play a song and asked if that was Buck Eyed Rabbit. He remembered that from last year and we worked on that one without music. Yea for him. Such a rewarding experience!
