Free Tab for May 2017 - "White Rose Waltz"

Hi all,

I've just finished uploading this month's free tab arrangement on my website, Eagle Creek Music. Jesse Presley "J.P." Fraley was one of the most prominent Kentucky fiddlers of his generation. Although he passed away in 2011 at the age of 87, his influence is still felt in old-time music circles from his native Kentucky to points all over the world. In honor of his birth month of May, this month's tune is an arrangement of a traditional waltz that has become strongly associated with J.P. called "The White Rose Waltz". It is believed that this is one of the tunes that the young J.P. may have initially learned from the now legendary fiddler Ed Haley, who J.P. was able to spend a lot of time with as a boy, absorbing both his tunes and techniques.

Fraley was especially known for his uniquely beautiful tone and lilting quality of his music, which came through in everything he played, from old-time fiddle tunes, to waltzes, aires, and two-steps. That soulful touch earned him 1st place in countless fiddle contests over the years, and eventually the coveted title of Master Fiddler. But his greatest passion was sharing his music, style, and techniques with others, especially young fiddlers, who he would "mentor" the way Ed Haley had mentored him.

Along with his wife, singer and guitarist Annadeene Prater Fraley, they established the annual Fraley Family Mountain Music Festival, which has been held at Carter Caves State Park near Olive Hill, KY, every year since 1971. Even though both Annadeene and J.P. have passed, the festival continues in their honor (always held the first weekend after Labor Day in September). The festival is devoted to the learning and sharing of old-time music, through workshops, open-stage performances, and best of all, the huge number of parking lot and campground jam sessions.

Here's a link to a 2008 KY public television documentary about the annual Fraley Family Mountain Music Festival.

Here's a link to a YouTube video of JP and Annadeene playing "White Rose Waltz".

Enjoy!
