I could listen to Jean's voice just reading the phone book out loud, all day long. Even her speaking voice is as lovely as a nightingale.

Nope. On page 5 it says to "Tune the bass string to a good note..." Then I go on to use C for those familiar with piano terminology.

Ok, thanks. So the instructions are given in C, but it doesn't say to tune to C.

All instructions are given by fret number. The only time C is mentioned is as a hypothetical case on pages 5 and 45. I used it because C major is the "natural" scale on the piano.

I was reading this interview of Jean Ritchie today:

http://www.arts.gov/honors/heritage/fel ... 3&type=int

There are some interesting comments about her father's playing of the Ed Thomas he bought (only played fast square dance tunes (set running tunes) and only in a major tuning). And about her playing harmony notes against the tune when she sang because she couldn't hear the strings if she played the tune itself.

There is also a little piece in the interview about the 6+ that I think you'll enjoy...

Sorry to bump up this old thread, but I found today that the link that Robin Clark posted above to the Jean Ritchie interview no longer works, so I searched a bit and found the working link is now here:
https://www.arts.gov/honors/heritage/fe ... an-ritchie
The audio and the written interview is included there.
It's a good interview and shouldn't be 'mislaid'. :)

The interview was a delight to see on this cold day here in Ohio!
PS- Someday, I'd like to know details from Janita Baker about the evolution of the JRitchie model Blue Lion.
