Check the novels of Sharon McCrumb -- IIRC her novel Songcatcher was the loose basis for the movie of the same name. Not novels, but there are a number of folk tales and similar writings out of Kentucky and Virginia which feature the dulcimer in some way/shape/form. Look under Appalachian Folklore.
