Kevin Jollimore
Does anyone have a downloadable headstock/pegbox template? Thanks.
NoterMan
Are you looking for a flat guitar style tuning head or a scroll head? Modern tuners, zither pins or wooden pegs?.
KWL
What NoterMan asked. Answer those questions and let me know where to email the the templates and I will scan and send it to you. Ken "The dulcimer sings a sweet song."
Guitarpeggio
Hi, I would love a set of plans as well. I’m making a scroll head with modern tuners, open back preferred.
NoterMan
Guitarpeggio -- if you look at my last post in your "building" thread, you can copy that profile phot and scale it pretty much anyway you want.
Guitarpeggio
Thanks NoterMan! I do have a couple design questions in the other thread about that.
NoterMan
Hmmm I swear I answered about gluing the scroll head to the head block -- grain orientation doesn't matter; don't sand smooth so the glue can grab both pieces; if you don't feel comfortable wit just that, you can drill and glue in a dowel from either direction to make a more secure joint. Guitarpeggio
Thanks for the clarification on grain orientation, NoterMan! I am used to guitar string tension of 200lbs. I imagine the dulcimer is a lot less!
NoterMan
Yep -- a LOT less. And the design/builds are very forgiving. This is still a folk instrument, not highly developed.
Absinthe
There are a whole pile of standard guitar headstock shapes in the PD. I downloaded all of them and then systematically scaled them down to something that makes sense for CBG. They would be also appropriate for 3 and 4 string dulcimer. It doesn't look like I can share SVG files here so here is a link to my Dropbox with them in it. It also has a subdirectory containing all the originals. I hope this helps someone.Head Stock Templates (Modified for 1-1/2" necks and 3 or 4 machines. ) Here are a couple examples on some necks: Here is what the whole collection looks like printed out onto 1/2" mdf and carefully cut out.
